Texas DPS permit planning

Your Texas commercial learner’s permit.

A permit starts the driving portion of your CDL plan. Begin with DPS near home and confirm the skills-test site separately.

Which permit do I need?

Tell DPS whether your goal is Class A, Class B, or a passenger or school bus endorsement. Use its document checklist and medical-certification instructions. Knowledge tests depend on your intended vehicle, brakes and endorsements.

Can I test on the day DPS issues my permit?

If a CLP is required, Texas DPS requires you to hold it for at least 14 days before the driving test. Use the interval to confirm your applicable theory and behind-the-wheel training, then verify your appointment and representative test vehicle.

Where can I study?

The Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook is the official reference. Get Your CDL Quick! also offers optional online practice topics. A practice score helps you identify material to revisit before taking the actual DPS knowledge test.
